The stuff I use is mostly 'acoustically transparent' - whatever that means. It is used a lot in various densities as air filters for A/C and dust extractors, so it certainly has a massive airflow rating - certainly in the densities I use in any case. Since I started using it I find it indispensable, and tend to get through a lot of it. Whatever off cuts I get, my wife tends to use in her various sewing projects..

Hi, Polyester acoustic panels in NZ typically come in a range of weights from 35 - 50 Kg M3 and thicknesses from 25-100mm. However the greatest benefit is they can optionally be manufactured with Polyester cloth (at no extra price) bonded to one surface of the panel. This is typically in a small range of colours (Black, White & Grey) but it means you don't have to cover the panels - the raw material is finished ready for your studio. All this for the same price as Fiber Glass, Rock Wool and Cotton. Best Regards

So, I bought some of the denim insulation yesterday, and tested them out with a blanket over top. Sound was improved, I then tried without blanket sitting directly on the insulation, sound was more improved. Then I doubled them up to about 6 inches or so, and man! What an improvement. Then I started sneezing and coughing.. and realized there was dust coming out of them when sitting on them and it was all over my room. Yay. =P
So, would a Guilford of Maine-like transparent fabric keep the the dust from coming out? But if air can get through it, won't that mean dust will be coming out too?
Or should I cover it in cotton batting and fabric?

Gotta admit, it was definitely stupid sitting on it with nothing over it.. but hey, part of being young and living and learning I guess! =)

You can experiment with both. A/B. Glad you are moving toward a solution.

Update: I decided I really couldn't get a satisfactory response from my system with my seating. So, I moved it all. My room looks like a wreck, but hey it sounds the best it's ever sounded! Currently sitting in a small computer chair, which isn't super comfortable.
Any non-reflective seating you guys find particular comfortable?
Thanks very much.

I'd advise anyone looking to improve their room to strip it down if they haven't already. Currently I'm sitting on my folded bedding, pillows and a zafu stacked up to the height of a bean bag chair. That may or may not work for you - my whole arrangement is adjusted for nearly floor seating. I can't vouch for this brand or review but this is usually what I have in mind when I think of transparent seating: www.wiretotheear.com/2008/01/23/studio-ergonomics-herman-miller-aeron-chairs/Then again Deadmau5 uses a heavy leather chair so idk. -m

Man... the chairs seem to make such a negative impact on the sound, but comfort is priceless though.. decisions, decisions! I like how you go all out though!

I actually hadn't considered the acoustic benefit to forgoing a chair but thanks now that you mention it...

parkman Hey I was window shopping and saw something cool. It's an art stand which is designed to be placed behind couches. You could get a couch with lumbar support (low backed) and put one of those behind you with an absorber mounted in it. Let me know and I can post a pic. -m
