My listening room doubles as a home theater, so I built a riser for a second row of seats, that measures about 8.5' by 3.5', and 7 inches tall. Its made of plywood and 2x8, with a carpeting cover stapled around it. My question will I get any benefit by stuffing the inside of this with treatment, like 3 inch rockwool panels, or will the wood neutralize the bass trapping effect of doing this?

If the wood is solid with no holes or slots etc, sound waves won't be able to get inside to be absorbed. But there can be a benefit to stuffing a riser with fluffy insulation: It will avoid resonance and rattling from the riser itself acting like a drum. It's probably not likely that will be a problem as long as you have a couch or some other weight on top. I suppose you could rap on the riser with your fist or a hammer and listen for low frequency ringing. If you have no problems it's probably okay as is.

Hmm, I was afraid of that, since it is solid with no slats or holes. I was hoping that maybe since my current outstanding issue is mainly a bump at 80hz, that this would be low enough to have an effect through wood.

You can use amroc.andymel.eu/ as a guide to determine which mode is causing the ringing. Off the top of my head 80Hz is just under 8 feet for a half wavelength so if you have a dimension of about 8 or 24 feet you'll have your answer. I know this because my rear wall is 23.83 feet and causing ringing at 85Hz. Placing absorption to interfere with that axis should help. Oh, just read the dimension you posted. Is 8.5' the width of your room? That'll do it. Thanks, -m

Not sure I follow. 8.5 is the length of the riser

If you leave the front of the riser almost completely open (just have some legs to hold up the from batten) and fill with fluffy - cover front with muslin to allow sound to enter it could help a small amount - how much is difficult to gauge as the seating in front of it will inevitably influence it as well.

Theres a big couch directly in front, so that probably is not going to be a plus for this idea.

It's possible to make a tuned trap out of wood that vibrates. But it's not trivial, and is probably more effort than just adding a bunch of traditional bass traps. --Ethan
