I'm building a 661 piece 2d diffuser with wells ranging from 1cm - 24cm, well width is 27mm squared. How do I hang it? I've read on Gearslutz that a french cleat style is the way to go but can someone give me a step by step on what to do from here. See photo

Are you asking how to make a French cleat? Regardless, this will be one heavy mutha. So you want to attach the diffuser, through a cleat or directly, to studs in the wall. You might be able to get away with Molly bolts into drywall, but you certainly have studs there so I'd do it that way.

I did not know what a french cleat was so I googled it. It turns out I DID make one before, I just never knew what it was called. So just google "french cleat" for images. As you will see, it is used for hanging stuff on walls. If you want to make one out of wood, you need a table saw. You can also buy metal channel ones. Google is your friend.
Take Ethan's advice and screw into studs.

Do I drill holes through the front of the diffuser to bolt the French cleat wood to the diffuser? If so then I should do this before I glue any more wells on right? Also do I countersink the holes so that the well can still be glued onto the diffuser? And then I'll have to countersink the holes on the part of the French cleat attached to the back of the diffuser so that the nut doesn't stick out and prevent the French cleat from working? The wall I'll be hanging it on is concrete, so if I use long heavy duty screws I should be good? Cheers

Another option is to use two D-rings on the back of the diffuser, near the top, with each D-ring screwed solidly through the back plate into one of the 2x2 pieces. Here's a D-ring, and they're available in many sizes and strengths at any hardware store: Then you'll have very strong screws sticking out of the wall somehow, to hang the D-rings on.
