So Alexis Taylor made this with the Focusrite Scarlett series: youtu.be/a2thkRt94lU?list=PLCVQdTVGwQpwZBFciTeel-GdKU-LlDq-XViews: 51k Comments about which interface he used: 0 Sounds good sonically. Not really my style but interfaces don't come bundled with style, do they? Thanks Ethan - I would have never believed it. -m

I happen to have a Focusrite Scarlett in my collection of computer audio interfaces. Not at all an expensive piece - I spent about $100 on mine. From a usage viewpoint its one of the easier USB audio interfaces thwt I've used. Among the currently available products, among the better ones in terms of measured performance. In general, its noise and distortion is about 90 dB or better down, and its frequency response is within a few tenths of a dB over the nominal audible range. Very unlikely to have any audible flaws if used with reasonable care which its human-engineered design seems to promote. Here's an online fairly complete technical test: html.midifan.com/review/2i2/[MME]%20Scarlett%202i2%20USB%202448.htmThe all time champion USB audio interfaces were probably the eMu 1212 and brandmates. They are out of production, and IME somewhat harder to use.

I have a Scarlett 8i6 and it's fabulous. Very clean, very quiet, very affordable. Here's my "10 passes" loop-back listener challenge using my Scarlett: Converter Loop-Back Tests

Here's my "10 passes" loop-back listener challenge using my Scarlett: Converter Loop-Back TestsOh geez I hadn't realized that loopback test was with a Scarlett - cool. Now that I've looked into the Scarletts it seems like everyone has one. It's like when I got a job at a tire store: suddenly I noticed tires everywhere. The 2i2 and 2i4 are class-compliant too so they work with Ubuntu. -m

I have a Scarlett 8i6 and it's fabulous. Very clean, very quiet, very affordable. Here's my "10 passes" loop-back listener challenge using my Scarlett: Converter Loop-Back TestsHello everybody. I did Ethan Winer's Loop-Back challenge (group 1 and 3) and to be honest, I cannot really make a difference between the recordings. This said, I am not an audio expert :-) I've owned a Scarlett 18i20 for 2 years and only recently noticed some low noise on the analog inputs: To track down the noise I unplugged everything from the Scarlett except power cord, usb cable and speakers. Then I turned up the input levels to the maximum and both via speakers or headphones I can clearly hear a low level noise on each of the 8 analog inputs. Not sure if this noise level is normal to this unit, maybe someone here can help me? Here's an Aiff audio recording of the noise (inputs 3+4), nothing connected, input level all the way up: scarlett_in.aif.zip (718.83 KB) As I said, I am not an audio expert, but I could clearly hear this noise on one of my recent recordings. I still have a warranty for 6 more months, so it'd be great to hear your opinions on this. Thanks, Julius

Hiss like that is normal from a preamp when the gain is at maximum. To do a proper test you need to either short the input or, better, connect it to a 150 ohm resistor. With nothing plugged in the noise is probably louder than it would be when actually connected to a microphone.

Thanks Ethan, good to know. Will reconnect the card and look back into it again. I might just have turned the input gain up too much on the last recordings.
