Hey there guys,
My new premises is part of an old railway arch and not being expert in acoustics I would really appreciate some help working out how to set up a studio in such a space. I've carried out measurements with REW (using an AKG c214 so I don't know how accurate they will be) and by ear.
The room which we will be able to use for listening is on top of a temporary wooden structure at the back of the arch which puts it fairly close to the concave ceiling (at some points less than 6 feet). The space itself is approx 11ft by 6ft and is created by temporary wooden gobo type structures (photo also included).
I figured it was going to be completely mad for sound up there but when we carried out measurements (by ear also) the low end seemed to be shockingly flat up to about 180hz. Is this a mistake on our part or are the non-existent walls and the fact we're about 10 ft off the ground turning the rest of the room into a kind of massive bass trap?
ALL SPL
The high end was nuts with massive build ups in the 8 -12 k region. You could hear it very audibly.
SPL and PHASE
IMPULSE
We are hoping to be able to record vocals either in the control room or build a sort of vocal booth we can put up and take down to use in the main space of the arch (downstairs).
So my questions are ;
What you guys think would be the best way to approach this on a shoe string budget maybe £500?
What needs to be prioritized and what can we leave till a later date whilst still being able to record vocals and mix a record?
Should we buy acoustic treatment or could we build some into the walls/gobos ourselves?
My current plan of action would be to buy a room kit with at least 6-8 bass traps and some high frequency foam stuff and go from there. Any thoughts?
Thank you to anyone who has taken the time to read this or reply.
Best
Jake
P.S. Please let me know if I can post any of the measurement graphs better.
