I'm going to guess and say that if you covered every square inch with absorption it might barely be enough.
I think it's less that diffusion is pointless and more maximizing the space at hand. More diffusion can = less absorption.
Maybe unless you have combined the efforts like Real Traps has.

Oh ok I thought that I had read somewhere that diffusion if less than 4 ft from listening position wouldn't make any difference as the reflections would be too close to be scattered away from you??

I remember Ethan suggesting 1' distance per inch of diffusor depth. Then again, I don't think anyone is making 1" diffusors since the effective frequency would be so high. -m

Right, but you also need RFZ wide band absorbers on the side and ceiling reflection points. If you use 4" thick material spaced about 4" from the wall, you'll get some LF performance from them too.
