I have read Ethan's chapter about testing mics.
just as an alternative if you dont have an extra mic to compare it - If you play pink sound though speakers and record with the mic can you get a basic idea if there is problem in its frequency responce? besides the obvious test to record something random as your voice.
I dont't mean to precicesly compare its frequency responce but to decide if it is working propelry (if its perfomance function has been affected by dust or it is just oveused etc.. ) --
(That would be useful if you want ot buy a used one.)

Sure, I think so but it's probably a good idea to know what the response of the speaker is, even if it's only a data sheet. You can also get data sheets of various mic models so you can compare your DUT (device under test) to published data too. It won't be precise but you should see some correlation.
