Hey all, It's been a bit since I've been on the forums. Ethan - Thank You for pointing me towards this new one. After much time spent researching and planning we're finally ready to begin our studio build and I'd love to collect any additional feedback, insight or best practices from the community. It's very exciting to embark on this and I truly appreciate the knowledge and expertise everyone shares here - so many thanks in advance! I've attached a photo below of our current CAD sketch of the desired room sizes, both for the control & live rooms. We're currently looking to begin construction of new walls and I'm hoping to attain some insight behind decoupling. As I've read thru numerous opinions on how to decouple studs, ceilings and walls, - our current thoughts are to construct new double walls (using 2x layers of drywall with green glue in between) and rock wool as insulation. http://instagram.com/p/BCqv5LeDAMJ In addition we're looking to use MLV (mass loaded vinyl) under the floor plate and ceiling plate to further help in isolating these new walls from the ceilings and floor. As we have a slight advantage of doing this from scratch, I'm hoping to tackle this strategically and correctly from the beginning in hopes of getting some great end results. Would love to hear any insight/feedback anyone might have as to this idea and if it seems logically sound (no pun intended) Massive Thanks everyone! _Steve

I can offer a little advice. Green Glue works well, and the Green Glue web site actually offers a lot of advice about isolation. As far as I know, MLV is not a useful product, mostly because it costs much more than other materials and methods that work just as well.
Do you have Home Recording Studio: Build it Like the Pros by Rod Gervais? It's an excellent resource that includes many detailed drawings.

Hi Ethan, thanks much for reaching back!
Yes I do have that book and have been studying non-stop as well as mulling thru numerous forums on options, alternatives and suggestions. I know a lot of these "specialty" products claim this and that, and in the end its usually hype and marketing.
Aside from MLV, another option we had been considering were ND isolator mounts (for suspending the wall framework off the floor) - Would you have any insight/experience on those by chance or another material to consider when decoupling walls/framework from floor?
Thanks much!
_Steve

I know all about how isolation is achieved, but I'm not knowledgeable about the latest available products. In all honesty, if your main goal is as much isolation as possible, you'll do better asking Rod directly in the Studio Design section at Gearslutz.
