Hi Ethan (and everyone here). Around 2 or 3 years ago I was dwelling with a lot of acoustic problems on my semi-dedicated home theater/listening room, and with your help on your old forum, and a lot of reading on the Gearslutz forum, I managed to improve very significantly the acoustics of the room. Thank you very much for everything you do for the community!
Long story short, my room's main problem is a resonating suspended ceiling, which together with ceramic tiles on the floor and almost empty walls, caused a lot of echoes. Since then, I placed one big ceiling cloud, covering the first reflection points on the ceiling, and 2 broadband panels on the side walls, plus several bass traps on the two back corners. Image below, showing the room as it is currently - I removed the cloud to be easier to see the room, but the remaining panels and bass traps I have are represented in RED.
I tried to place the two 2.5'' broadband panels on the side walls closer the screen, following your advice to cover the first reflection points, but unfortunately the black Camira Cara fabric I'm using is a bit reflective, and the light coming from the screen reflects on the fabric, enough to be quite distracting when watching a movie. So, I quickly took those out, moving them away from the screen. I want to improve the acoustics, but not at the expense of so much light reflections.
In any case, my big doubt and question is how to improve the current situation. Initially my plan was to add several more absorber panels to the side walls (the GREEN panels on the 2nd image), and also a 4'' bass trap above the window-door, but I'm afraid I make the room too ''dead sounding'', from too much absorption. When I look at the photos of your room the number of panels I have seems very small, tho.
I can't put anything on the back wall, unfortunately (because there's a big window/door there), unless I place them behind the thick curtains, on the right side of the room, but due to the distance between the curtains and the wall behind, those diffusion panels could only be around 3.5 inches, at the most. But if that isn't possible, and regarding the side walls, I'm wondering if placing 2 or 3 panels on the side walls could help.
The panels I've been thinking for the side walls would be slightly wider than most, because I'm planning to cover them with acoustically transparent printed fabric from Spoonflower, with sci-fi images that are relatively wide. This means that I'd have the 24 x 48'' rockwool slab placed on the middle of the panel, and I'd have around 2'' on each side, either empty, or with some type of diffusion. Or maybe with 2 laths, which I'm guessing would help somewhat to scatter the sound.
One of my regular panels (A), and one of these wider panels with laths on each side (B) that I've been thinking about.
I'd appreciate immensely your advice.
Thanks in advance for all comments and suggestions. Your help has been invaluable.
