I'm on my quest to share the ABX comparator and knowledge to my fellows on audio forums and local community I'm active on at least two ''audiophile'' forum and I' m planning to prepare a tutorial to use foobar2000 and the abx comparator. I know there's already good procedures out there but I don't want to copy them without the owner's agreement. I know people will have to convert the music files on their own but I also want to be able to provide some files, like Ethan provided on his web site. I have a couple of tests ideas and I hope I could at least help a couple of forum users. The first goal would be to informe people and the second to debunk some myths. (I know I'm crazy and I like to debate). I'm no mixing engineer just a music lover, I'm willing to learn but I have limited to knowledge about this. I would like to have files like : Clipping vs non-clipping, hard clipping vs soft clipping, dithered vs undithered, content above 20kHz vs no content, tube vs SS etc. Like I said above there's already youtube videos or files shared on the net but nothing centralized, and I don't want to use thing without the owner's approval. I have a first draft for my procedure (attached), I went with a step by step procedure since I'm aiming at general boards. The more it's easy the more we could reach people. French is my first language so feel free to correct me and my texts ABX procedure 1.0.docx (725.85 KB). If someone here wants to help or we could organise ourselve to publish on a lot of forums at the same time and get the post sticky I think it could be great. ( Again I know some forums already have this kind of information)

There are some files like that on my web site, and a few more in my Audio Expert book. I think your best method is to first get some music to use for tests, then learn how to apply clipping and dithering etc yourself so you can create the needed examples. I offered to let you use any of my music, and sent you a link. So email me which files you want (if any are suitable for you), and I'll send you the original Wave files.

So you want to clip audio and apply EQ for free? In the screenshot above I've applied clip-producing gain to some chicken samples and opened an graphical equalizer window in a free cross-platform program called Audacity.

I'm with Hex. I've never used this program, but everyone says it's fabulous: sourceforge.net/projects/audacity/I assume it has plug-ins to do all of the basic editing you'd need.

Here is an interesting site with a lot of seemingly ABX-able files related to jitter: www.sereneaudio.com/blog/what-does-jitter-sound-likeIn MS Edge, I see there are no download buttons, but in Chrome there are. There is a good collection of either designed-for-ABXing or potentially ABXable files on the web, but they are where you find them. The audio construction forums have some, the headphone forums have some. Hydrogen Audio has a bunch of threads that oh, by the way link them. It has its own files forum that tends to concentrate on them. My old PCABX web site is still accessible on the Wayback Machine and the raft of test files I developed in the early Y2K timeframe is still there. There are 3 interlinked web sites, PCABX.com, CDABX.com and PCABX-Pro.com. There are a number of techniques for modifying existing music files to add potentially audible artifacts. I should write this up, as well as manual time-synching and manual level-matching. There are some programs for adding distortion at: www.audiosignal.co.uk

Thanks a lot for the links! I'll add sereneaudio in my useful link section. And I'll have to check a little bit more audiosignal.
I'm not able to connect to all three adress : PCABX.com, CDABX.com and PCABX-Pro.com
I would like to link hydrogen audio, but I didn't found a thread with centralized informations, at least informations that I was looking for. I'm doing this procedure because I found hydrogenaudio, I really appreciate the informations a I found there.
That would be great.
I'm refering to my past experience and I didn't know what was clipping or compression before I actively searched to hear it. For a ''newby'' it means nothing, and I'm sure there's people to ashamed to ask on a forum.
My procedure is getting viewed a lot but not so much particpation (predictable). I'm sure it will help at least one person. I'll keep updating it during my experimentations. I also did the french version and shared it with my local fellows.
