Hey guys, hope you're slap happy but not too sloppy. Ethan regularly talks about the ideal desk being non-existent or at least as small as possible so I've been thinking about this and how to implement it. Didn't someone on here recently use mesh? Pretty much, I want to use this thread as a way to compile ideas on how to create the most perfect, acoustically-transparent workspace.
Currently, I'm jockeying this mule:
I was going to remove the top shelf and just use two rack uprights to put by my feet. I have a 61-key midi controller and an apple numeric keyboard which gives me about two feet depth and 1 foot extra width. Pretty soon I'll be getting a PC and that's going on the lower shelf along with my current mac mini and external enclosures. All this is just a plan and I'm open to suggestions.
Thanks.

I have cut my desk to be really ridiculously small.. Looks dumb, sounds better..
I'll post pictures later of my tiny desk...
That desk looks good, i have always wanted a proper desk like that to place some gear and stuff. On the other hand i don't wanna introduce any comb filtering from it.

I just remembered the metal mesh they sell at hardware stores. Maybe I'll look into that. Looking forward to your pics.

I forgot to take pictures, here's one taken from back of the room like a week ago. I just bordered it around the desk. You get the idea of how small it is.

That's what's up. Is that a Vesa table clamp or a floor stander for the monitor? Right now my mixcube is behind my monitor. I'm looking at a tripod monitor stand with vesa mount so I can pull my monitor down when I'm mixing.
What kind of sonic improvements did you notice when you shrunk your desk? More importantly, where do you put your beer?

It's a millenium bs-500 monitor stand. (floor stander) I had to cut it shorter so the mixcube don't block my screen. (it's adjustable but lowest position still was too high). Desk caused some weirdness in the midrange area, which changed when I moved my head up and down, it was definitely coming from the desk. It has always been angled, and I could easily switch how much angled(those legs that are attached to the desk can be rotated to be taller or shorter) still I didn't manage to get the same sound as without the desk. One real good example I remember was guitars on Alice Cooper's song Poison. Now with that super small desk, it's almost non-existent. Sound the same as without. It's still needs to be angled tho. There's still some space behind that DAW controller or next to me is a drawer where I keep most of my microphones and random stuff. So, there or there (Mostly its actually coffee, I'm a coffee junkie)

So, there or there (Mostly its actually coffee, I'm a coffee junkie) Those things must be one of those drop ship doohickies since I have the same ones branded as Auray. I thought about getting those but then I can't use an angling vesa mount to, like you say, minimize reflections. The problem I've gotten is when I do videos, my voice bounces off the desk and monitor and probably resonates in my rack cubbies and totally sucks to EQ out.
I got a related question for you: what advice do you have for my next step in treating my room? I've got the 20 4" rigid panels and four vertical corners super chunked. I ask since you've got a great response and have iteratively dampened your space. I'm thinking to do 1 or 2'-thick fluffy panels and combine my current rigid ones into 8"ers. Did you get more mileage from your fat cloud or what?
For anyone: to completely trap down to 55Hz, you need 5'-thick absorbers. Clearly, even 4" rigid panels have some effect down there. Is it just like a tapered roll-off response, similar to a high-pass filter, that we get with thinner panels? I'm pretty sure I'll never put 5 feet of insulation in my room but I want to know what's a reasonable amount for a world-class response.
