So I have 12(soon to be 18) GIK Gotham N23 diffusers behind the listening position in my space and I just recently discovered they are creating a flutter/slap echo because they are parallel to the 65" TV in front of the listening position. I was actually under the impression that diffusers did not cause slap echo, but I definitely hear a "boing" sound, and when I tested by placing a 4 inch thick panel in front of the tv, voila, no more "boing".(this also worked by placing panels in front of just the diffusers instead of the tv)
Anyhow.. I had some ideas.
1)Place absorption in front of tv when listening to music, in order to still benefit from the diffusers, and then move those absorbers in front of the diffusion when I watch a movie. A little bit of a pain, but hey I'd live.
2)or angle the diffusers so they aren't parallel to the tv. They're 17×17inches each, and right now I have them placed altogether 4 panels wide, and 3 high. I figured I could either angle them in an accordion type shape, where they sort of form a slight "W" towards the listening position, or I could separate them into two groups of 6 and angle them inward toward the main listening position, to almost make a wide, shallow "V" shape or the opposite way. Or, maybe even curve them kind of like a polydiffuser.
3)or just move the diffusers to the side walls where the secondary reflections are.
Just wanted another opinion on whether any of these were a bad idea acoustically or anything else I might be overlooking. I bet probably the best thing to do is just listen in each set up, but it'll be difficult to move these diffusers quickly enough to really A/B and compare.
(For reference, the rest of the listening area is covered in 4+ inch thick 244 panels, along with over 50 GIK soffit bass traps. I made sure to treat all the reflection points, parallel walls, corners, etc.)
Also, is there a general rule of thumb for how angled a surface has to be in order to prevent slap echo?
Thanks for your time!
