I am a podcaster and I am confused by the specifications listed by the manufactures. Can you help me decipher this information? I want to do interviews in noisy outdoor gatherings using 2 Shure SM58 Microphones into a field recorder via XRL. These microphones require a lot of gain. Can you help me find a budget recorder like the Zoom H5. Any help in finding a recorder in this class with good preamps would be greatly appreciated.

I have only a little experience with field recorders. I use my original Zoom H2 which is fabulous, and I imagine newer models are even better. I use the H2 with its built-in microphones, and also as digital recorder through its line inputs, and also with an external lapel mic when shooting videos. You can spend $5,000 or even more! So the first consideration is your budget, and then specs. Good quality is pretty affordable these days, compared to 30 years ago when professional audio gear really was expensive. So I'd look mainly at the preamp noise spec since that's your concern. In all honesty, my best suggestion is to ask one of the more reputable dealers for their advice. Folks at places like B&H Photo and Sweetwater (and others) know more than I do about this. Of course, anyone else here is welcome to chime in with their advice!

You could always normalize gain in your DAW while leaving the preamps down on the unit. Why SM58? Besides not needing an inordinate amount of gain, I'm thinking that's not the best choice for your application. Have you seen this: www.bhphotovideo.com/find/newsLetter/Better-Sounding-Interviews.jsp ? You can get some Shure omnis for under a hundo.

Depends on what sort of sound quality you are shooting for. For example, both standard hand-held cardioid and omni mics have their problems as interview mics. Is ambient noise an issue for you? What kind of noise - wind noise or environmental (usually mechanical and other vocal sounds) or both? If so, then hand held cardioids (e.g. SM 57/58) and omnis are about as bad of choices as you could make.
