Hi Ethan, I was going to email you privately but the answer to this might be helpful to others....
I have a small mix room that I've treated DIY and it works very well. The key component was the ceiling treatment, as the ceilings in my condo are 8' high and concrete slabs with on them.
I want to address my main living area so that I can do some minor acoustic instrument and vocal recording in there from time to time, but it is a nice living area and so I want to keep it looking nice! I can address the walls and corners with moveable treatment and blankets, etc... But the 8' high concrete slab ceiling is a terrible source of comb filtering. I've basically settled on rfz panels and I had a nice chat with Jim on the phone regarding flush mounting them for a spouse friendly appearance.
My question here, as I am thinking more about the details, relates to quantity and arrangement. The room itself is 12' wide and about 24' long. Half is a living area with carpet and the other half is a dining area with tile. The carpeted living area is the ceiling I want to treat. As the RFZ panels are 32"x42" I figured 4 panels spaced evenly about the 12'x12' area would work well, but I as I think more about it, I am concerned about the spaces between the panels. And, as I have to tapcon the ceiling to mount these, repairs aren't easy so I want to get it right the first time. In your experience, how far can these panels be spaced apart from each other and still retain effectiveness in a room like this? I was originally thinking of running them long ways, 3' off the perimeter walls which will give about 8" between them in that direction. 3' off the back wall gives 7' of length plus the space that direction, so realistically I could have 8" between them lengthwise as well and get seemingly good coverage. There will end up with an 8"x8" in coverage he center of the 4 panels however. And of course an 8" strip lengthwise.....
do you think that will still be effective enough to clean up the early reflections? The other option is to get 6 panels and run them the opposite direction and butt mount them... 2.5' off each side wall gives a solid 8'x8' cloud. It will be more difficult to mount a clean looking installation I think by butt mounting them, but there is no question it will be more effective. I would prefer to just do the 4 panels if you think it will be effective, but I do not want to do all this work and not get it right either.....
thank you!
p.s. I have your McIntosh 3ways in this living room and they sound terrific. I am about to get the surrounds redone as they're beginning to deteriorate and low frequency information is causing some mechanical noise. But they are wonderful and I am very appreciative I have them.
