Hello everyone I am just cleaning out my mothers basement so that I can build my studiodown there. The room is quite big but one wall is angled as you can see on the floor plan. On the slanted wall stands a very big wardrobe that would be perfect for sound absorption. My initial thought was that my mixing position would be facing the short wall with the door in the left corner. That way the room would get bigger on the right side in the back because of the splayed wall. But this way the loudspeakers would not face the long way down the room. and I would have to move the big wardrobe to the long wall so that I would have it in my back as sound absorption. If i would position myself facing the wall with the windows (which are small and just below the ceiling), the loudspeakers would face the long way down the room and the wardrobe would be already there but i would have a splayed wall in my back. Any advice what would be the better option and why? I am also not sure if I should move the Wardrobe into one of the corners so that it can be used as a bass trap there as well. It is 60cm deep. Thanks to all for your help Best wishes Harald Kellerplan Model 1.pdf (22.74 KB)

I agree with your second thought to face the windows at the top of your drawing, so the speakers fire the longer way down the room. I'd have to see a photo of the wardrobe, but you should probably keep it away from corners so you'll have good places to put bass traps. I usually suggest putting stuff like book shelves etc along a side wall toward the rear of the room, but not so far back they reach the corner.

But in that case doesn't the splayed wall in the back create problems? Usually you see splayed side walls in control rooms were the room gets wider behind you. That's why my initial idea was sitting facing the wall with the door on the left. I'm also unsure about the fact that the part were the door is makes that wall also wider than the the length behind me if I sit facing the windows. I'm not sure if my mind create more problems that are in fact actually there. I just want to make it right from the start before I have to change everything later again. Thanks for the help. Harald P.S. I added a new floor plan with the wardrobe in orange and the green lines are the marking a third into the room from each wall. I will upload pictures of the room later today. the ones I have now are too big.

You're in luck! I'm have a series dedicated to setting up a listening room: www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLf112S63WiBsq_oWZ8Pa5RLACk_O18qhYI agree with you and Ethan: face the windows, put the bookshelf along the side wall behind you (but not in a corner) and you're over thinking. Let me know if anything was unclear. -m

But in that case doesn't the splayed wall in the back create problems? Usually you see splayed side walls in control rooms were the room gets wider behind you. Your room is not totally 100 percent perfect because of that, but it's the room you have. But that would be so much worse! Yes, that's another problem, but it too is not the end of the world. Exactly. --Ethan

Thanks guys. I will go with your suggestions and try not to think too much. Here are some pictures, including the big wardrobe. Still a lot of stuff inside the room, i know. We are starting to paint the walls tomorrow. Floor will come next week. I'll keep you updated about the progress.

That's awesome you'll be painting because I think it's best to empty a room before setting it up.
Be sure to take that time to find your 38% and do the voice test I mentioned in my video - it helped in my current room anyway.
