Anyone has any suggestion or opinion for acoustic curtains ( brand or DYI project ) when panels is not an option?
The purpose is to reduce reverb and decibels in a part of a classroom where 5 year old children play somehow ....loud.
Thanks

I don't know brands but there are purpose built, installable accordion style partitions available.
Also, those heavy stage curtains from middle school come to mind.

Thick fluffy fabric (think cotton or polyester batting) works well. But it has to be very thick to be useful. Stage curtains are great if they're very thick, but those cost a lot!

There's this cotton tape made by Johnson & Johnson.
I heard it's really hard to scream when someone puts it over your mouth.
Pretty cheap too.

I looked at the site and I can find no acoustic test data. You can ask if they have something. If not, try google for generic test data.
In general the deeper the pleats, the lower the absorption freq, the closer/tighter the pleats the higher the absorption coefficient BUT the absorption coefficient will remain unknown. If you're just trying to reduce reverb, 2 to 4 inch pleats should be good but here again, without performance data, you're taking a chance of exactly how well it will work. As with panels, hanging the same distance (2 to 4") off the wall helps too.
Cheers, Rock

Hi,
What about the ceiling?
For Classrooms - the first priority is ceiling acoustic treatment. Walls are typically a second priority area because you get more value for your money with ceiling treatment and you are not using up any valuable classroom wall space. Simply glue lightweight 50mm thick Polyester acoustic panels, evenly spread on the ceiling above the area you want to "quieten" and bingo - problem solved for less than $1000.
Best Regards Nigel
