Hello, Ethan. Thank you for this forum. I may have a few questions.. My room is 12.7 ft wide x 20 ft in length with a peaked ceiling of 8 ft at the walls to 11 ft in the center. I "produce" hip-hop/rap (urban) music, which is relativity heavy in bass, or at least that's how I like to mix either my kick drums or my baselines (high in 31 Hz, 63 Hz and/or 125 Hz) using Waves API-560 plugin. I don't really think my room sounds bad, probably due to my ignorance, but I am hoping to notice an obvious improvement after adding acoustic treatment.
I just attached Photos to my room to give you an insight. When I'm mixing my kick drums (adding more low-end to fairly weak kick drum), I notice my first reflection points (when I touch the wall) just as "strong" in bass as what I feel in my corners. I'm considering building 6" thick plain OC 703 panels (2 at the left, and 2 at the right) with a 4" air space from the wall. Would that solve my problem/be the best solution? Also, how much of an improvement would I be making by building the panels 6 inches thick as apposed to 4 inches?
As far as the corners bass traps and behind my speakers, I am looking to building again 6" OC 703 (perhaps the FRK). I say perhaps, because it's relatively much higher in price. I am, however, willing to pay more for the FRK type. Is it worth it? How else could I improve the bass traps? Wood? Haha I don't know, I have become quite confused with all the reading I've been doing. What is this "membrane" you refer to on the front surface behind the fabric? "semi-reflective plastic membrane" how could I obtain that myself locally?
What do you think about my speaker placement near the glass door? Should I switch my "mix" area with where I have my bed positioned?
What is your personal opinion, after seeing my room in the photos, of how many panels I should add to get a good/not dead sounding room without using any diffusers? Please, note, I use my room as a "Control/Mixing" room. haha.
Thank you
-Omar
