I hope you've heard the advice: only upgrade if something is broken. A lot of newbies forget this advice (if they've heard it) when it comes to software and OSes. Due to mounting incompatibilities and suffering system performance, I will install a Samsung 850 EVO on my late 2012 Mac Mini 6,2 tomorrow, and along with it, a newer OS.
I'm upgrading from OS X 10.8.5 Mountain Lion to macOS 10.13 High Sierra. They threw a curveball, though - the High Sierra installer available from the App store is only a seed, when downloaded from my version of the OS. They should give me a 5GB installer. Instead, they give me a 20MB magnet file. I can't make a bootable installer out of it, unfortunately. Luckily, I previously downloaded an OS X 10.11 El Capitan installer app and, from it, made a bootable thumb drive.
From El Capitan I will download the (seed) High Sierra installer. After that process finishes, I will re-download the High Sierra installer which should (according to support) be the full 5GB app. Then I will finalize the upgrade process by overwriting my El Capitan installer with the new High Sierra one. I am omitting the endless amount of software that will also need to be installed and activated.
I understand that, currently, Ableton Live, Native Instruments software and Waves are all incompatible with High Sierra. I don't feel worry despite these being my primary softwares for music creation. I have plenty of work to do on my site, making videos, reading books and learning other software to be much bothered. Live 9.7.5 will be High Sierra compatible and it's due in a week or so (mid-October 2017 is the quote). I can use the included plugins for a while, if need be.
I'm starting this thread to be a log where I can review my thoughts and be of help to other musicians in a similar spot. Feel free to ask questions or provide feedback.
Thanks.
