Hi, Ethan: thanks for your appearance on the Skeptics Guide podcast - very informative and a good listen. I've even bought your book because I was so impressed! Perhaps someone can explain this phenomenon: as I've got older, I'm finding it harder and harder to hear all the dialog on TV. To compensate, I raise the volume, and it's too loud for my wife. The difference is that I don't like to miss one word (e.g. if you miss "not" in a sentence, you get the opposite message!), whereas my wife is happy to hardly pay attention. Here's the background: - Professionally installed 5.1 stereo with quality speakers. Installation is 7 years old. Receiver is RX-V767.
- I've set it up with YPAO in automatic mode.
- I've tried raising the level of the middle speaker.
- I've tried different DSP programs settings on the receiver: eg. Movie, Action, Standard
- I've tried dialog lift.
- I've tried Pure Direct.
- I don't watch commercial TV - I mostly watch a streaming service.
Some settings improved the situation, but now my new smart TV forces the receiver to "Movie" mode.
So, my question: what is the root cause of this problem, and how to actually solve it?
Many thanks!

With all due respect, I think it's time to have your hearing checked. I hope that's not the problem but you need to know if it is.

Having trouble hearing dialog from a center speaker is a common problem in rooms that have no acoustic treatment. Before you get fitted for a hearing aid try adding absorber panels at the side-wall reflection points as explained here: How To Set Up A RoomAnd here: Early ReflectionsAnd for the full story: Early Reflections

Thanks for the replies.
We do have an unusual room (with a 4 metre clerestory) and windows on the RHS and ornamental shelf on the LHS.
Lots of hard surfaces. When we moved in we had to add acoustic panels just to be able to talk in the area.
I think I'll read the book and figure out how best to deal with reflections.
I think this will be a challenge.

It's not a big challenge if you can put panels in the right places. Panels on stands is another option.
