Subwoofer on the floor or not?
I tried to find measurements or more details about subwoofer placed higher in the room but didn't get good information.
Can it help with room modes? Let say I do a coffee table with a subwoofer on a stand right next to the listening spot.

Put the subwoofer on a stand so it's exactly where your head would be at the listening position. Then crawl around on the floor and LISTEN and take measurements until you find the best spot. Put the sub there.

Put the sub there. I know this is a workaround to find the right spot. But what about a long term placement higher in the room? I guess right behind the head is not a great idea, but I think it would be possible to integrate it in the room's fourniture, no?

Why do you feel that higher placement is necessary?

Why do you feel that higher placement is necessary? Because the right spot on the floor may be not practical or functional. Or can it help with height modes?

It depends on which mode is causing the trouble. REW has a room simulator. You can move the sub around the space and see how the modal response changes. That's much faster and easier than actually moving everything around.

There tends to be some default 'best practice' locations that seem to work repeatably well. The best one, I've found is 1/4 distance of your short, front, wall in the corner that 'sees' your longest length angle. Floor or ceiling doesn't matter but as close as possible to two boundaries does.

I've recently been playing around with the Room Simulator feature of REW, and it does exactly what you're asking about. You can put the sub anywhere in the room - on the floor, up at the ceiling etc. This app works best with rectangle rooms, and you should still measure the response to find the final placements. But this will get you very close to optimum with minimal physical messing around. If you're on Facebook I just made a post there about this REW feature. It's at the top of the list: www.facebook.com/ethan.winer.1
