Hello and thank you for taking my inquiry. First time post. I plan on setting up a small home hobby / recording / mixing studio. The dimensions of the only room available to me at the moment is far from ideal (10' 4" W x 13' 10" L x 7' 8" H) I am considering some DIY treatment and such but don't know exactly what I should do about the wall to wall carpeting. Should it stay, or should it go. If removing it is the preferred method, then we would consider replacing the carpet with some laminate flooring. I could always throw down an area rug if need be. Your input would be greatly appreciated. Note: This newbie may have some additional questions as the project moves along if that is alright! My apologies if the attached images are too large. I am not exactly sure how to include pictures in my post. Sincerely. Peter

Hey peter. I think, in the end, carpet is a less critical issue than a standard course of panels. In case you haven't decided, I suggest you try facing the fat side of the room. Just be aware of that angled wall that'll probably be a reflection point.

Is the double door on the upper left an entrance to a closet? If it is, and if it's a thin door, then, would the "real" acoustic dimensions of the room extend to include the closet walls?

My wife and I have been looking for an excuse for getting rid of the carpeting in our home. So, this may be the ideal time to do so. I am assuming that this as well will not have a major impact on my setup. When you say "the fat side" are you referring to the 88" wall immediately to the right as you walk into the room. Or the wall facing the window?

Yes that is in fact a closet with double sliding doors. Doors are pretty flimsy and not very thick. If you were asking me about the "real" acoustic dimensions of the room extending to include the closet walls? Unfortunately. I don't think that I am qualified to answer that question. But, if I had to guess I would probably have to say yes as it is a cavity and would have to be treated appropriately. But, what do I know! I could be way off.

The dimensions of your room don't really matter. They do but also don't. They do in the sense that they impact your acoustics but don't in the sense that you need to treat the place anyway. If you're committed to this room for whatever reason, the only help that dimensions will give you is correlating them to problem resonances. Just treat the room and worry about the details later.

Hexspa. Thanks again. Now, how exactly would I go about determining what type and amount of treatment that I will need. Not to mention placement.

What concerns me about "that" fat side and what I neglected to mention is that I will have to contend with this beast. Might be a little tight getting into this small room
