Hi,
I've previously used consumer broadband fiberglass bass traps to treat my room, but I've become increasingly nervous about fiberglass, and concerned that the fibers can escape the trap and cause lung damage.
My wife has extremely sensitive lungs due to a medical condition, and I want to be able to treat my room, but in a way that won't put her at risk in any way.
What can be done? If there aren't any good options, I'll just get rid of my bass traps.
Thank you

I came across something that I believe can be a healthy alternative. Shredded denim. One of many articles: UltraTouch Denim Insulation

I'm pretty sure that if you covered your traps with some kind of acoustically transparent fabric like grill cloth you'll be fine (unless you beat your traps with a stick:) If you're really sensitive to dust and allergens, I believe keeping humidity levels moderate (between 30% and 50% RH) is good and running an air purifier should help too... but that's even if you don't have bass traps. FWIW, fiberglass is know to release what is called "nuisance dust" when working with it so it's best to wear a face mask and long sleeve shirt but after you cover the FG, you are good to go. You can read this: www.idph.state.il.us/envhealth/factsheets/fiberglass.htm

Thanks, I already have GIK acoustic treatment.
I've been thinking about the Ultratouch as well, but would like something premade, as I'm not experienced with woodworking. Haven't been able to find any pre-made bass traps using Ultratouch.
If I covered GIk traps with plastic wrap, would that be effective, and would it ruin their absorptive properties?

I'm no expert but plastic wrap may be too reflective.

Sorry, it wouldn't be plastic wrap but a clear plastic bag. Not sure if that'd make a difference or not.

Sorry, it wouldn't be plastic wrap but a clear plastic bag. Not sure if that'd make a difference or not. I think that the whole purpose for why acoustic panels are built the way that they are built is to allow the absorbent material to do just that absorb. Any solid material (non-porous) like plastic may impede that absorption.

You can face the panels with thin plastic but it needs to be in contact with the absorbent material and only on the side facing the room. Maybe a layer of acoustically-transparent fabric won't defeat the purpose but remember that doing this will change the panel's properties.
I understand the health concern but, unless someone moshes into your fluffy, few fibers are flying off into the air. You're better off using fabric but, at the end of the day, if you have any mineral fiber in your space it'll probably always concern you.

What if I bought ultratouch insulation batts, left them in their plastic, and then wrapped them in moving blankets?

If its really thin plastic, that whats used for packing. One layer of that, shouldn't affect too much. Even John Sayers uses it in his ceiling traps.

What if I bought ultratouch insulation batts, left them in their plastic, and then wrapped them in moving blankets? Sounds legit. Post pix with acoustic results if you can plx. thx.
