Hi Ethan I was trying to experiment with my focal CMS 50 and I followed the instructions of the manual recommending changing some of the controls - such as the desktop notch a setting the recommend when the speakers are on a console ---- please see pic --- - the results in multiple measurements were really good in the bass response - it becomes significantly more flat ---- Is this too good to be true ? Do you recommend using them? Many thanks please see at the pic

This is interesting, and I've never seen that mentioned in a speaker owner's manual. It seems they calculated the comb filter response peak based on the distance between the woofer driver and the surface the speaker rests on. I'm not sure how they did that because a peak at 160 Hz relates to a distance of 3-1/2 feet. I searched the Focal site for more information but found nothing. Maybe the peak is related to a console surface some distance in front of the speakers. Do you know of a more detailed explanation? Regardless, your own measurements are the final arbiter. So if using this switch really does make the response flatter, then by all means use it!

Hi Ethan thanks -
I really don't know how it works - I cannot think any other explanation - other than you already said - but it made flatter the responce 100 to 300 by 5 db!
I have only one slight peak at 320 something - and trying to treat it with more broadband absorbers -
I will post against later the final results.
