I'll received my minidsp 2x4 HD so I'm trying to figure out how I'll setup my crossover. My speakers are TAD clone and for what I found there were originaly two different crossover points : 650hz and 800hz. But both were : LF -36db/oct and HF -12db/oct. My current setup is the 800hz crossover (TN-4) I'm planning to try the 650hz setup. Is there a way to know if it's a Linkwitz-Riley or a Butterworth? Will I have to test both? Since speakers are huge, measuring them will be a complicated task.

The topologies are functionally identical with one exception. A LR is made from two cascaded Butterworth filters, so it's -6 dB at Fc rather than -3 dB. But the mathematical properties (rolloff, Q, passband ripple, stopband attenuation) are the same because the math describing the filter shape is the same.

So using Linkwitz-Riley for Lows and Highs should be good?

I can't make any recommendations as to what filtering is appropriate for the products you own. The manufacturer's recommendations should be followed.

I can't make any recommendations as to what filtering is appropriate for the products you own. The manufacturer's recommendations should be followed. TD-4002 : Crossover Frequency 600Hz or higher (-12dB/oct.). TL-1603 : We recommended that the dividing network (low-pass filter) for the TL-1603 use a crossover frequency of 900Hz or lower, and a attenuating slope of 12dB/oct. or 18dB/oct. But has you see, TAD chose a -36db/oct themselve. To begin I won't try to mess what TAD's ingeneers thought was better. If there's something wrong between Butterworth and Linkwitz-Riley I guess I'll see something wrong with my measurements?
