Anyone else doing field recording? Sampling? Backup audio systems?
I need a second audio recorder to make tutorials - part of the PC migration. The thing is that apparently some of the handheld devices drift and that's bad news for syncing to video. Also, and I know Ethan will crucify me for saying this, I'm not sold on the Zoom H4n's audio quality - the sibilant range is smeary from what I've heard. Besides that, start up time is supposed to be slow and battery life not excellent, among other shortcomings.
For these reasons, I'm looking at either the Zoom F4, the Tascam 701d, the CEntrance MixerFace R4R or even the Sound Devices MixPre 3. These are all generally in the same price range and tailored for A/V work. I'm truly at a loss as to which one to pick and I don't think it'll be easy to line them all up on a table to compare head-to-head due to no retailers I'm aware of stocking them all. One premier YouTuber says to pick between Zoom and Sound Devices but I defied his suggestion before and am satisfied with my choice. I can be insufferable, I know.
Any of you guys have an opinion on this hardware? Got my ears in the grapevine for the next month or so. I can accept outright disagreement too!
Thanks.
