Hello Ethan/anyone else reading this. I've just purchased a pair of KRK Rokit 5's and would like some advice on the best positioning for the monitors. I've read the information you have on your website as well as a design document for bass traps (https://www.readyacoustics.com/DIY-BASS-TRAPS-MADE-EASY.pdf) that I plan on making with Roxul Safe n' Sound. I was curious if there was other panels I could make to deal with first reflections and if so, should I stick to the same design in the link above or should I adjust them? I've also attached a room layout I made on SmartDraw. Thanks. EDIT: I forgot to mention that the floor-to-ceiling measurement is 95". The floor is carpet. Attachments:

Right where you have them in the diagram seems like a good start. The process of setting up a room is very much like peeling an onion that continues to grow: you can take advice at face value or iteratively improve your situation. There are guidelines that I'm sure Ethan has linked to in the stickies. Given that his articles are the gold standard, you could do worse than starting there. Most of what I know is in a pdf on my site (link in my sig). My current general advice is to follow a plan outlined by someone more experienced. Initially, improvise, substitute and deviate very little unless absolutely necessary. After achieving initial success only then do I advise modifying a single element at once, measuring the result, interpreting the data and comparing to your control. Good luck and thanks.

The bass trap tutorial that I linked in my first post explains how to make 4 foot tall bass traps with 4" of insulation. Should I make 2 of them and stack them in the corners of my room? Can I use 4" thick panels at the first reflection points or should I make them smaller? Also if you look at the floor plan I attached I think I'll have a bit of a problem with the lower right hand corner where my door is. How would I put a trap in that corner while still being able to open/close the door?

1, Yes. 2, Yes but use non FRK (no foil, paper or plastic). You want to absorb all, including mid and hi freqs. 3, Door question: (We just talked about this last week or so. You guys need to help yourself a little by hanging out here and looking at the other threads.) Simple solution: Use moveable traps. More complicated: Make a hinged panel you can swing into the corner. Even More complicated: Rig an actuator and motor to swing the trap out of the way when the door is opened. Use your imagination.
Cheers, Rock

Yes, but the foil/paper faces into the room (so it's really not "backing", for our purposes, it's "fronting").

Dale, will you please just take the time to read Ethan's material, all your basic questions will be answered there.
Failing that, attach kraft paper using spray glue.

would like some advice on the best positioning for the monitors. The only way to know where is best is by measuring the response at the listening position repeatedly as you experiment.
