We are building a studio in a guesthouse and the only room available to us is shared with our kitchen. My wife has been so kind as to let me section off enough space to work with. The original room dimensions are
16ftL x13.5ftW x8FtH
I am able to use 1OftL x13.5ftW x8FtH of this room. I have not measured my room (and the thought of doing it is kind of intimidating) but I bought a XREF20 reference microphone from Sonarworks..
With such a small room I know that Bass trapping is probably the most important thing.
So far we have built a 6 inch thick cloud over the mix location made with Roxul...with a 5.5 inch gap from the ceiling. Since we can’t drill into the ceiling (pipes, electrical wires) we have created a support system with MTC pipe. I have included photos of our situation.
There is also a 6 inch thick front wall/ceiling corner panel (directly in front of the cloud at a slant) made with Roxul.
We made 3 free standing corner looking panel traps with Roxul (they are the same material as the fw ceiling panel) all are about 6 ft tall and have door hinges on them to open and shut but we don’t know where to put them. They can free stand anywhere in the room.
In the front corners we have tube traps that resonate (bought on Craigslist but they’re legit) and are propped on r-13 cylinders to cover each front wall corner.
For early reflection we have one gobo Roxul trap on each wall 3.5 in thick wrapped in burlap. They have feet on them to move around and are about 6 ft tall.
We have 8 more giant rolls of r-13 leftover and we also have four more panels of Roxul 48x16x3 leftover
We are confused about what we should do with all of this R13 Pink fluffy. There are conflicting opinions on whether or not it should be left wrapped in the cylinder or unpackaged for greater area. The only reason I bought them is because I saw something that Ethan Winer said about leaving them wrapped up and stacked.
Also someone from another site said something about the fact it has no NRC rating that it isn’t useful....after doing more research I’m reading about doing 20x20 soffit traps in the wall ceiling corners with the pink fluffy (uncompressed).
So as you can see we are doing what we can and we are musicians we have no Scientific knowledge of this and we are trying to get things done fast So we can get back to making music. Please help us! I have a link posted with a few pictures for you to see what my progress looks like so far.
