I'm planning to build a multichannel preamp/amplifier speaker system and connect Dolby discrete analogue in. Any inexpensive stand alone decoders available? Not PC based. Is some sort of diy even possible?

Very interesting. Exactly what are you planning? Can you show us a basic block diagram of your concept?

The plan is: 1) Preamp enclosure that has a separate op-amp preamps for all 6 channels and one master volume. All manually adjustable at the front. 5.1 decoder in the box fed to separate DAC's that connect to the op-amps. 2) The power amps can be a choice picked from different amp designs that I build.. Mostly Apex designs for gain stage amps but have some choices for class D as well.. Likely one enclosure for all channels except the sub. 3) I design and build all the speakers which will get switched in and out at times for experimentation and design purposes.
The proprietary decoder seems to be not easy to come up with.. There's stuff on Ali but it's all Synthesized surround sound, not discrete.

I'm on that forum and didn't come across that thread.. It did help. Looks like its near impossible.. I'll just use Synthesized Channels until something comes up.. Thanks!
