Hi. How concerned should I be about my speaker stands being somewhat wobbly - aside from them toppling over, of course. I mean, I know this can compress and rarify the waves but... I guess I could measure this using a sine waves and checking the tuning..
Aside from conducting an experiment do any of you have knowledge on this?
Thanks,
-m

Unless you can break the laws of physics - your stands will be fine..

Steve - the doppler effect IS physics.
Ethan - I did but I inferred it to regard isolation; I'm speaking of greater distances of travel rather than just transference. Besides you mention that the stationary resolution must not exceed an 1/8th inch because the room response will change. That is yet another factor.
So I can assume that yes, wobbly speaker stands are no good. I don't know how much mine move, only that they've been knocked over by the cat at least once. I call from my desk up a "no chon zone" (I call cats "chons") so that shouldn't be a problem. I hadn't considered that a moving speaker would relate to the room's response - I was only considering a doppler effect. Hence, yes, I have eliminated transference of resonance as a factor due to your diligent - and much appreciated - research.
Sorry if I'm incoherent and moody - it's bed time.
Thanks,
-m

Well now, maybe I need to go back to school, but I rather doubt that.

Honestly. I know what a wobble is, and I understand Doppler & Red/Blueshift. Vibration is a different matter, but hey ho. Enough from me. Probably different ways of saying stuff. I won't charge for that.

A discussion physics could be interesting but the simple solution, (if there actually is a problem) obviously is to build a sturdy stand. I built some at a custom height many years ago out of 3/8 and 3/4 plywood scraps. They still work (and don't wobble Cheers, Rock

Jellies wobble - i.e., oscillate slowly in an uncontrolled manner. Usually very slowly - i.e. - less than 5hz. Getting a speaker cone weighing a mere few grams to induce said wobble would - seriously - be possible?? How?
Now getting them to vibrate at doppler frequencies - ? Different thing.
At least from where I am. But, as I said - different ways of saying stuff..
And yes, I did wonder about why use wobbly stands if they caused consternation.

For cheap wood, the Home Depot stores in the Chicagoland area sell "cull" lumber for 10% or 20% of the original cost. When I'm in building mode, I stop in whenever I drive past the store and check to see if they have any thing I can use. Many times there is nothing but sometimes you get lucky. In any case, I would not worry to much. Now on the other hand, maybe you can devise an experiment to measure the wobble and it's audio implication?
Cheers, Rock

However these speaker stands are also too high so I'll probably make some at some point. The budget factor was awhile ago when I purchased these. I used to go to the Home Depot off North Ave back when Transitions was over there. -m
