Hi all,
First post on the forum, but I've been reading diligently for some time...
I recently bought a house and now want to setup one of the bedrooms for working and mixing. I work as a lecturer in music and regularly engineer recordings for people outside of work, but whenever I've needed to mix I've either had to hire a studio, or do several mixes in non-ideal rooms, until I got something I was happy with. I'm hoping I can setup a space for prepping and marking assignments, plus doing my own engineering work. My intention is to use this space exclusively for work/editing/mixing (i.e. no tracking).
Below is a (crude) drawing of the dimensions of my room. The floor is carpeted and the ceiling is 8 foot high.
There's a space in the left corner of the room, which is where a fitted wardrobe would have been installed, but this space is empty at present. I've no aversion to filling in this space if it would significantly improve the acoustics of the room, although it would be nice to be able to put some shelves in there for storage.
To begin with, I'm looking for advice on where to position the desk/speakers. The shape and position of the window and door make it tricky, but I had envisioned positioning the desk on the bottom wall of the room, so the window would be behind the listening position. This way I'd be able to install bass traps in the corners to the rear of the listening position. But I'm open to advise/criticism/abuse/sarcasm...
I'm hoping once I've established the best listening position, I can take some measurements (I have macbook pro, REW, Behringer ECM8000, good audio interface) and post the results, to them ascertain the best method(s) of treating the room. A very good friend of mine is a skilled carpenter and will be building the acoustic panels for me.
Any and all advice would be gratefully received. Please let me know if there's any additional info I can provide.
Kind Regards,
Sean
